Summer Activities!

Since we are just a few short days to the end of school, we are going to start posting about fun activities to do with all the kiddos when they are out of school!

First up is “Theme Weeks”

Think of themes that might entertain the wee ones — We like Art, Weather, Ocean, Insects, Animals, Food, Space, etc!

Go ahead and print out a calendar (Very easy to do on a word document) and pick your weeks — we use 2 for some of the bigger themes.  Next up think of activities to do with these themes:
Ocean – Go to the beach, Make Lobster Prints, Jello Oceans, or other activities found here!

Weather – Wind Socks, Weather Activities, Youtube is great to watch videos of weather (just watch them first).

Art- Make their own art based on Famous art works

Insects – send them outside to catch bugs, make bugs out of paper plates, Grape Caterpillars ,

Animals – There are unlimited posibilites, but if you can visit a zoo – Around Charleston you can visit Magnolia Plantation or Charlestowne Landing for animal experiences.

Food- Dress the part, apron and everything, let them pick stuff they have never tried and help you cook it! Learn about what are vegetables and what is a fruit.

Space-Lots of space themed crafts, watch space shuttle launches on YouTube, learn about no gravity, the other planets, the sun and stars!

The thing to remember is always make it fun! Don’t let them know they are learning something.  You can find these activities and more on Pinterest.  We have a board called Summer Activities where you can find all sorts of fun activities! Follow us on Pinterest!

This summer, have a plan and your weeks will go smoothly! Happy Summer!

Happy Earth Day

Tweet this article!

With Earth Day just a few days away, we wanted to share an “Earth Friendly” activity with you! Did you know its easy and cheap to build your own compost bin? Well it is!

What you will need –

6-8 gallon plastic container with a lid
Top Soil
Drill

All you need to do is drill  1 cm holes along the sides of the container.  Then drill 2 3cm holes in 2 of the corners of the bottom of the container.
Add a couple inches of top soil to the container, you can add leaves to the soil also.

Once a week stir the container!

To help you compost here are some things to remember –

Vegetable and Fruit scraps, dead leaves and debris, black and white news paper, egg shells and hair from your hair brush.
You should stay away from meat, bones, processed food, dairy and plastics.
If there is heat coming from the container you are doing it right!

Sponsor an Easter Basket

This month we are offering customers a chance to sponsor an Easter Basket for a child at Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center!

There are several children who will not receive an Easter Basket this year with out the help of our community! We are asking for your help! You can sponsor a basket, purchase “Easter Basket Filler Items” from the store or drop off candy and toiletries!

There are plenty of age specific items in the store for purchase, if you wish to purchase candy and toiletries, the children’s ages range from infant – 11. The majority of the children are  7-9 and about 50/50 boys and girls.  Although we would prefer gender neutral items.

We need the items by April 4th, to stuff the baskets and deliver them to Dee Norton Children’s Center

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching here are some crafts to do with your little ones –

Heart Crayons — Last year I saw silicon heart cupcake trays in the dollar section at Target and picked up a few, this year they are coming in handy! We will be making heart shaped crayons! Fill cupcake tin with broken crayons (remove paper wrappers) and bake at 250 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Disney’s Family Fun website has this great picture on what to do with the heart shaped crayons

Crayon Hearts
Paper Love Bugs –
I can remember making these when I was little!
You will need –
1 Toilet Paper Roll
Construction Paper
Pipe Cleaners
Glue
Cut out two large hearts for the wings (make the width slightly larger than the toilet paper tube. Next glue the hearts together pointy ins facing and overlapping each other. With another color construction paper, glue it around the TP Roll. Glue 2 pipe cleaners to the top of the TP Roll (Hot Glue will speed this process up). Decorate Eyes, and the wings of the “LoveBug” Curl the pipe cleaners and you will have an adorable LoveBug! Kaboose.com has a picture of this cute craft!
Stained Glass Hearts
What you need –
Wax Paper
Crayon Shavings
Blow Dryer
Lay out one sheet of wax paper. Cover it with crayon shavings (We use an old grater to grate things for crafts). Lay another sheet over the top of the shavings. Hold the paper flat and on the highest heat and low power setting. It will not take long for the shavings to melt. Be careful the melted crayons will be hot. Let them cool and cut out desired shapes! We recommend using red and pink crayons and cut out in the shapes of hearts! You can use a hole punch and tie a ribbon to hang it somewhere!
kaboose.com has a picture of this one, and a ton of other crafts too!
